the day of magazines

Before I start my post, I have to send a huge-normous thank you to each and every one of you who emailed me about our big move! Your prayers and encouragement mean so much to me! I am lucky to have such wonderful readers and friends!! I am home from CHA and recovering! LOL! I will share a post soon with photos and my favs, so stay tuned!

_010FM%20Cover01WEB

The Woman Today is a local interest magazine here in the Duluth, MN area. Its a beautiful magazine, with talented and interesting people. Its such a good read that even my hubby wants to take a look. A couple of months ago, they called me! Can you believe it? They wrote an article about me and a little bit of what I do in the paper crafting world. I am SO honored!! I cannot wait to see the issue in real life. For those of you who can’t get the issue, you can check out the issue online HERE. You can also see a couple of projects with instructions HERE.

For those of you arriving here for the first time because of the issue, thank you! Feel free to peek around and if you have any questions, just drop me a line at my email address listed underneath my photo on the right side. You can find a list of all my publications and my resume HERE.

Paper Crafts Connection and the Moxie Fab World blogs will both be celebrating the release of this issue during the week of Feb. 22-26!! AND, because it kind of got buried, I wanted to remind you to leave a comment about tutorials you would like to see and you could win a copy of this issue. :) Check that out HERE. I will draw a winner at 2 pm (CST) on Friday and announce the winner sometime later that day.

and good blogging news…most of my CHA work has been released, so I can share it with you! which means, I will be able to schedule posts during all the craziness. yay! thanks so much for stopping by!

you’ve been on my mind

You've Been on My Mind

Just simple and elegant today. The stamped background piece was very simple to do. I stamped the image in clear ink and embossed with clear embossing powder. Then, I took a Ranger foam inking tool and rubbed Broken China Distressing ink over the top. Isn’t that beautiful?

I should be home from CHA today, but will be on my way to pick up the little man from grandma and grandpa’s house. Whew, its been 3 weekends in a row of grandpas and grandmas, he is one spoiled little man about now! :)

thanks for stopping by!

Supplies: Stamps (Hero Arts-Cling Antique Brocade) (Papertrey Ink-Big and Bold Wishes), Ink (Tsukineko-Versamark Watermark) (Ranger-Broken China Distressing Ink), Embossing Powder (Stampendous-Clear Detail), Ribbon and button (my stash)

your smile says it all

your smile says it all

For this card, I made a frame (yep, just a little bit obsessed with them lately :)). I used Spellbinders™ Labels 6, Petite Ovals, and for a twist, I used the Flourish Impressabilities.™

Here is how to add the embossing twist:

  1. Die cut the Label 6 shape and petite oval. (you can run these through at the same time because cardstock can handle it.)
  2. Take the magnetic plate with the dies and cardstock off your mat.
  3. Put the Impressabilities™ down on the mat.
  4. Place the dies (cutting edge up), with cardstock still in the die, over the Impressabilities™.
  5. Top with an embossing mat.
  6. Run through and wow! :)

To bring out the embossing on the frame, I rubbed grey ink over the raised portions. Why grey? Well, the patterned papers were grey-toned and it brought the colors together better.

This is a scheduled post, as I am enjoying CHA in, hopefully, sunny Anaheim, California! :) Can’t wait to show you all the new fabulousness! thanks for stopping by!

Supplies: Patterned paper (Pink Paislee-Amber Road), Cardstock (Papertrey Ink-Rustic White), Butterfly and sentiment die cuts (My Mind’s Eye), Pearls (Hero Arts), Ink (Clearsnap-Colorbox Chalk Grey Whale), Spellbinders (Labels 6, Petite Ovals, Flourish Impressabilities™)

ETA: I have to brag just a little bit; the special issue from Paper Crafts called Stamp It! has hit shelves and I have 12 projects in the issue! Can you believe it? 12!!?! To say that I am smiling would be a huge understatement!! What an honor and a thrill!! So, I guess my smile does say it all!

there is one more AND...leave a comment here telling me what kinds of video tutorials you would like to see and I will pick a winner when I get back and you will get your very own copy of Stamp It!!!

Big Changes

Well, life has some very big changes in store for us. Last fall things started to take a big downturn at my husband’s job and we felt that for our family and our future, it might be time to start looking elsewhere for employment. That meant needing to leave the area. We decided to start looking around and my husband planned to start applying for jobs. We left the rest to God and His plan for us. And God had plans! My husband applied for a job on a very late Sunday night and by the next morning had a call from a recruiter. We flew down for interviews and a visit one week later, and by the end of the following week, we had a signed job offer. Two and a half weeks. That was it. We were expecting the process to take several months. What a shock!

So, starting in in mid-February we will officially become Iowans. I don’t even know how to say that! :) Its going to be a good change, but a sad one. Our families live where we are now. And I have never lived farther than 45 minutes from my childhood home. But, Cedar Rapids is a beautiful area with wonderful housing and a focus on young families. We know how blessed we are to be presented with such an offer and oh, so grateful!

We could use your prayers for safe travels, for safe moves, for quick house sales, for making new friends, for finding a new church, for my husband to adjust quickly to his new job, for families that are sad that we are leaving, and for our sadness at leaving.

Be a little patient with me, for a little longer. I feel like I have been a giant, non-creative, stressed-out flake for so long. If I have not gotten back to you, not followed through on something, or have just been annoying, please forgive me!! I will post here as often as I can for the next month or so. I do have a few cards in my stash to share, as I love to share with you!

Thanks for letting me share the new journey that life is taking our family on!!

Bakery Box Bonanza

This month at Pink Persimmon the creative team has been busy making projects with the darling bakery boxes that they carry in the store. Make sure and check out the blog with all the cute ideas! AND check out the ca-ute stamps for Valentine’s Day that are now on sale!

Bakery Box

Looking at the box, I didn’t want to cover it completely in paper. Hey, its Valentine’s Day, let’s run with the pink. So, I stamped the box in Versamark ink and the Swirl Journal stamps. It looks deceiving, but the set has 2 swirls, one accent image, and journaling lines. This might be my new go-to set!

I wrapped the box in patterned paper from Basic Grey, lace, and fabulous, oh so fabulous twine from Divine Twine. Its twine with a twist of color, and there are many to choose from. Yay!

The top of the box has two hearts from the Key to my Heart set. I stamped it twice on white cardstock and then twice on patterned paper. That way, I could cut the hearts out and decorate the center. Add a couple of pearls and you are done. I will be putting peanut butter cups in here, because they are my hubby’s favorite. I saw some giant ones at Target…I bet they would fit! :)

Let’s hope the ice and snow have subsided long enough for me to catch my flight to California. Fingers crossed! :) thanks for stopping by!

Supplies: Stamps-Pink Persimmon (Key to my Heart, Swirl Journal), Bakery Box (Pink Persimmon), Patterned paper-Basic Grey (Sugar Rush), Cardstock (Papertrey Ink-Stamper’s Select White), Ink (Stewart Superior-Palette Charcoal) (Tsukineko-Versamark Watermark), Lace (Wright’s), Twine (Divine Twine), Button (Making Memories), Pearls (Jenni Bowlin), Spellbinders (Classic Scalloped Rectangles Large)

Sorry! This project has been removed for publication in the January 2010 issue of CardMaker Magazine.

grateful for you

SORRY! This project has been removed for publication. It will appear in the April 2011 issue of CARDS magazine.

The background paper (Basic Grey Nook and Pantry) was the starting point for this card. I wanted to mimic the sunflowers on it, so I dug through my stash of bits and pieces and created this.

One thing I should mention, when creating a card, I try and do some pre-planning, to make things easier. I had to plan for a couple of things on this card; first thing, I didn’t want my brads to be attached to the base of the card, so that they do not show on the inside. And second, I have learned that when I use dimensional objects, I cannot stamp after they are placed. The thickness doesn’t allow the stamp to reach the cardstock. :) To show you what I mean, I will write out the steps I took to make this card.

  1. Create card base with Ocean Tides cardstock.
  2. Cut patterned paper to size.
  3. Distress edges with tool and ink.
  4. Score patterned paper using Scor Pal. (trying to create a quilted look)
  5. Adhere to card base.
  6. Die cut/emboss rectangle from Rustic White cardstock.
  7. Ink edges.
  8. Stamp sentiment on bottom of rectangle with brown ink.
  9. Adhere chipboard circle to top of rectangle with glue.
  10. Distress large black brad with Basic Grey file.
  11. Attach brad to center of circle.
  12. Adhere pre-made pearl flower center to brad.
  13. Distress lace with ink.
  14. Glue lace to left of rectangle.
  15. Foam mount rectangle to left side of card.
  16. Stamp leaf image onto Rustic White cardstock.
  17. Cut out leaves and glue underneath flower.
  18. Tie twine through button.
  19. Adhere button to right side of rectangle with a glue dot.

Well, I hope that was informative and if not, hopefully the card was cute enough to make you smile today! :) thanks ever so much for stopping by!

Supplies-Stamps (Papertrey Ink-Friends Til The End, Turning a New Leaf), Patterned paper (Basic Grey-Nook and Pantry), Cardstock (Papertrey Ink-Ocean Tides, Rustic White), Ink (Palette-Landscape, Dark Chocolate) (Clearsnap-Colorbox Chalk Creamy Brown), Brad (WR Memory Keepers), Pearls (Prima Say It with Centers), Chipboard (American Crafts Letterboard Collection), Button (Autumn Leaves)

Exciting News!

The big news, which I have been keeping for a long time, can finally be shared!!!!!

I was included in a book called "Create Your Dream Wedding" with artwork provided by Spellbinders, published by DRG, and sold by Annie's Attic. And they are selling it now. You can see it HERE!! Click on See More Photos and you can see a couple of my projects in photos 4 and 5!! Aren't the others amazing!?! AMAZING!! It will be available at CHA and Stacey Caron from Spellbinders will be doing a signing from 2-4 on Sunday!!

Becca Feeken, Linda Duke, Karen Taylor, Kazan Clark, Jennifer Davis, and myself were the designers in this book. Can you believe the company I was included with? I cannot wait to see the whole book!!

Housekeeping:

  1. I will be attending CHA in Anaheim, CA next weekend. I will be gone from Saturday through late Tuesday night. I will take photos and share when I get back. :) YAY!
  2. I owe you a tutorial on the card from my Spellbinders Surprise Party post. It will be coming next week. Sorry about that!
  3. A couple of people asked questions about why I ran the felt through once with the circle die and once with the scalloped circle die, instead of all at once, on THIS tutorial. The reason is, sometimes thicker materials can take several passes to cut all the way through. By running the felt through with each die individually, I made it easier on myself and the dies. Less cut points that way. Thanks for asking, love the questions!!
  4. Sneak peeks of new product will be starting soon on the Stampendous Blog and on their Facebook page. I will be working in their booth at CHA on Tuesday morning from 9 am- 11 am. Stop by and see me, if you are there!!
  5. Be on the look out for fun happenings with the Friends of Flourishes and the Flourishes Timeless Tuesday Challenge!
  6. Card Creations Start to Finish Vol 2 is available now! I am thrilled to have 3 cards in the issue!! It is gorgeous and inspiring!! And check out the fun challenge that Cath has over at Moxie Fab World! Complete the inside of one of your cards!

Whew! That was a ton of info!!! Enjoy your weekend, thanks for letting me share all my news!!! thanks for stopping by!

ETA: Even more fun! I have a layout being featured over at the Die Cuts RS blog. Thanks ladies!!! :)

Second Attempt Apple of my Eye Box

Second Attempt Apple of my Eye Box Base View

I love making these photo boxes. From adults, to my students, they have all enjoyed the process and these make wonderful gifts. Where are the photos? Open the lid and there they are.

All three photos FINAL

The twill is attached to the lid and base of the box. These boxes are very flexible, meaning, you can add as many photos, in whichever size you choose, just change the dimensions of the box.

photos ALL FINAL

Here is a close-up of all three photos on the twill.

Photo of Open Labels 12

And here is a photo of the new dies!

Cut two brown lids

1. Die cut/emboss two S4-247 Labels Twelve #6 (with #1 being the smallest) shapes from brown cardstock. These will be the top and bottom lid of the box. Sand the edges of one piece, to bring out the cardstock core color. Use that for the top lid.

Scoring and Cutting to Make Box

2. Cut kraft cardstock to 6.25” x 6.25.”

3. Score 1 3/4” in from each of the four sides.

4. Cut from the outer edge of the cardstock to each of the 4 scored scored intersections (as indicated by the arrows and lines on photo above).

Stamp Sides of Box Before Assmebling

5. Before assembling the box, stamp each of the sides with a background image. Do not worry about going over the edges, as a piece of cardstock will be covering the base.

Assmbling Box and Adding lids

6. Fold up sides and assemble box. Adhere one S4-247 Labels Twelve shape to the bottom of the lid.

7. Repeat steps 1-6 for the base of the box, except, change the cardstock dimensions to 6 1/8” x 6 1/8.”

Creating ribbon holders for lid and base

8. To create the lid and base holders for the ribbon, start by die cutting/embossing two S4-126 Classic Squares LG #5 from kraft cardstock. Use the number 5 die template.

Draw lines and anywhere hole punch for threading ribbon

9. Draw two lines on the back of each square, from corner to corner, diagonally. Where the two lines intersect, punch the largest hole, using an anywhere hole punch.

Ribbon through lid and base covers

10. Tie twill through each end with a small knot. Make sure that the twill is not twisted.

foam the ribbon tied cover to base and lid

11. Adhere thick foam adhesive to the bottom of the square. (Thick enough to allow the knot to not push the piece up.)

push foam taped lid into base

12. Push the cover into the base or lid of the box. Repeat for the other half. Once again, make sure that there are no twists in the twill. The box lid and base should now be attached by the twill.

pieces to cut for photos

13. To make the photo holders, die cut/emboss 6 S4-126 Classic Squares LG #4. You want 6, one for the front and one for the back for each photo.

14. Die cut/emboss 3 S4-247 Labels Twelve #3, from patterned paper.

layering photos and label shape

15. Layer the Labels Twelve die cut over the Classic Squares LG die cut. Then add photos. Don’t you love how nicely the two shapes play together? :)

hanging photos from twill

16. Lay the box lids apart, stretching the twill so it is laying flat. Starting with the middle piece, apply a strong adhesive to the back side of the brown cardstock square. Lay it behind the twill. Place the photo piece on top.

all three photos on twill

17. Repeat until all the photos are added.

18. Add twine-tied buttons to each photo.

stamping sentiment on label shape

19. To decorate the lid start by, die cutting/embossing S4-247 Labels Twelve #1 from yellow patterned paper. Stamp sentiment in black ink.

Second Attempt Apple of my Eye Box CU Lid

20. Die cut/emboss S4-247 Labels Twelve #5 from plaid patterned paper and adhere to lid.

21. Die cut/emboss S4-126 Classic Squares LG #4 from brown cardstock and sand the edges.

22. Die cut/emboss S4-267 Nested Apple #1 from red patterned paper.

23. Cut leaf from patterned paper. Adhere to back of apple.

24. Die cut/ emboss S4-247 Labels Twelve #5 from red patterned paper.

25. Cut top and bottom 3/4 “ off of Labels Twelve shape. Placing the two pieces cut side together, adhere them to the lid.

26. Adhere brown square, apple, and sentiment label on top of lid, as shown.

27. Tie twine through two buttons and adhere to red patterned paper.

28. Tie twine through larger button, with a bow. Adhere to sentiment label shape.

26. Adhere felt trim around bottom of top box lid.

27. Tie twine around felt, making a bow through a button.

26. Enjoy! You can also add this quote to the box, “Each day is a gift. Untie the ribbons.”

my boys

1109 KC lo My Boys

I just have to smile. I love this photo. This was Valentine’s Day back in 2008. We had a nice dinner at home, the three of us. :) I decorated the kitchen all up and we celebrated the love of our family that night. And seeing as we were all dressed up from the day, I had to grab the camera and take some photos.

I an attempt to keep this page somewhat masculine (I have been told my attempt was not all that successful… :)) I used cork pieces to create the background. Using some thin cork and a Scalloped Hearts die from Spellbinders™, I cut out many, many hearts and arranged them in a pattern. Love the look. I did use an Elmer’s Tacky glue to hold the cork down. Doing that on such a large space required me to press it under a heavy book for a day or so, but to me, it was worth the look.

Don’t forget the Spellbinders™ Surprise Party is going on! Check out all the details HERE. thanks for stopping by!

Spellbinders™, CHA, and a treat bag

Treat Bag

Good morning! Here is a simple, but cute treat bag that I made for Valentine’s Day. I made the scalloped frame using my Spellbinders™ die templates and felt. If you missed it, I did a video tutorial on this POST and here is a link to the VIDEO.

Treat Bag CU

A close-up look at the frame. I layered it with patterned paper, a scalloped heart from Spellbinders™ cut from felt, and a stamped sentiment on a Spellbinders™ Label Trio die cut.

CHA is only a few short weeks away-YAY! But it also means that we have been busy, busy, busy designing with the new Spellbinders™ dies being released at the show! AND that means a REVEAL starting TOMORROW!!! Here is a schedule of all the reveals. You DO NOT want to miss a day because you know there will be prizes!!! :) Enjoy!!
